I, for some reason, never saw or never appreciated the incredible sight of a space shuttle taking off. It's awe-inspiring - the amount of fuel, the colossal forces being applied to the ship, the complexity of the process. And that view from the external fuel tank of the world just falling away beneath, to the bright blue curve of the earth as the shuttle enters orbit, followed at last by the shuttle itself detaching and floating gracefully out of view.
Amazing, simply amazing. One of those moments I will remember for the rest of my life; it seems to me, even now, that space travel represents the boldest drive for exploration and adventure that humankind has yet reached.
