"It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."
-Margery Williams, The Velveteen Rabbit
Thanks to avad for this lovely quote.
One and a half more days. Hooray.
Made pancakes this morning for Matt, who brought me delicious maple syrup from Maine. Yum yum. There's a bunch of intern get-together/outings in the next couple days but I hate those last hanging out days when you know you probably won't ever see anybody again. Plus I have packing to do, and this going out stuff always requires cash, which I'm attempting to conserve. SO, I think I'll just be a hermit instead.
Kempo last night was really nice. I was sooo tired after, my legs were quite noodly but they're still holding me up! Renshi always likes to make us do self-defense exercises that require us to roll the other person over us.. which I think is completely stupid. Yeah, come and attack me, and in order to prevent you from raping me I'm going to get you onto the ground and roll you on top of me. That's a great idea. Thank goodness there's usually at least one other girl around, it means that I don't have to do this stuff with any of the large hulking guys in my class - who are all perfectly nice, but rather heavy. I'm starting to develop these muscles around the joints of my knee, they're exciting.
Anywho, Matt takes off today - such a short visit! Apparently he had the excitement of seeing a bar fight last night when he went out. hehe :o) Fun fun. Tonight I'm going to start cleaning since before I leave I have to clean the kitchen, bathroom, oven, vacuum, launder the sheets and do my own laundry. And I really need to finish this Michener book by tomorrow! OH and I HAVE to write thank-you notes. It's a good thing I got so much sleep last night (9 hours, wow!) because I won't be getting much tonight.
This morning we had a style meeting and the lady in charge of them brought in a person, Robyn Jackson, who taught us how to diagram the sentence "The two of us go back a long way, Acadia and I, half a century and then some." There had been some heated debate over whether it ought to be "Acadia and I" or "Acadia and me." Which do YOU think is correct? In the end we decided that "Acadia and I" is an apposition for "the two of us" rather than just "us," which would make it I and not me. To much fun :D The person who taught us said she and an ex-boyfriend of hers used to diagram weird sentences they heard on television, just to see whether or not they made grammatical sense! That's awesome :o)
PS. If you happen to be in a bookstore, take a peek into the new September issue of "National Geographic Adventure." I've got a small sidebar next to the Olympia roadtrip piece, and then the Adventure Guide for the Kenya walk. Also check out NG's September website (launched today!) for my "Did You Know?" piece on Namibia's fairy circles.
